Odoo vs SAP Business One: SAP Business One is a mature, partner-sold ERP focused on finance, inventory and distribution. Odoo is a modular suite of integrated apps covering accounting, sales, eCommerce, HR and service, with lower entry costs and phased rollouts. Choose SAP Business One if your group runs SAP; choose Odoo for one flexible platform.
We are Bundo Tech, an Official Odoo Partner based in Karachi, and we regularly meet companies that are choosing between these two systems or moving away from one of them. This guide compares them honestly on the criteria that decide real projects: scope, licensing, hosting, customisation, implementation time, localisation and total cost. If you already know you want an experienced team to run the evaluation with you, see our Odoo implementation services for companies worldwide.
Key takeaways
- SAP Business One is strong in finance, purchasing, inventory and distribution, and fits companies whose parent group already runs SAP.
- Odoo covers more of the business out of the box: CRM, eCommerce, website, POS, HR, payroll, projects, helpdesk and manufacturing all share one database.
- SAP Business One is sold only through SAP partners, with Professional, Limited and Starter user types; Odoo offers clear public per-user plans and a free open-source Community edition.
- Odoo projects are usually faster to start in phases, because each app can go live on its own.
- For most growing SMEs that want one system for sales, operations and finance, Odoo gives more coverage for the budget. A fixed-scope quote after a discovery call is the only honest way to compare cost.
What is the difference between Odoo and SAP Business One?
SAP Business One is SAP's ERP for small and mid-sized businesses. It runs on either Microsoft SQL Server or SAP HANA, has a Windows desktop client and a browser-based Web client, and is extended through its SDK and Service Layer API (see SAP Learning: SAP Business One and Web client architecture). Its core is accounting, banking, sales and purchasing documents, inventory, production and service. Many functions, such as advanced warehouse management, eCommerce or payroll, come from partner add-ons.
Odoo is a suite of business apps built on one platform and one PostgreSQL database. You start with the apps you need, for example Accounting, Sales and Inventory, and add Manufacturing, Point of Sale, eCommerce, Project, Helpdesk or Payroll later without integrations between them. Odoo has a free open-source Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition, and it is updated every year; Odoo 19 is the current major version.

Which has more features: Odoo or SAP Business One?
On finance and distribution the two are close. Both handle multi-currency accounting, bank reconciliation, budgets, landed costs, batch and serial numbers, price lists and approval flows. SAP Business One is often praised for its strict document flow (quotation, order, delivery, invoice) and its mature reporting for accountants.
The difference is breadth. In Odoo, the CRM pipeline, the website and webshop, the POS in your shops, the employee records, timesheets and the helpdesk are native apps that write to the same database as your accounting. With SAP Business One, companies typically combine the ERP with separate tools or add-ons for eCommerce, HR and payroll, field service or marketing, and then pay to keep those integrations working. If your business is mostly purchasing, stock and invoicing, this matters less. If you want sales, operations, people and service in one place, Odoo covers far more without extra products.
How much do Odoo and SAP Business One cost?
Total cost has four parts: licences, hosting, implementation and ongoing support. Odoo publishes its per-user prices on the official Odoo pricing page, and all apps are included in the Standard and Custom plans, so adding a new department does not mean buying a new product. Note that features such as Odoo Studio, multi-company, the external API and Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting require the Custom plan.
SAP does not publish a public list price for SAP Business One; quotes come from partners and depend on user types, database (SQL Server or HANA), hosting and add-ons. Comparing headline licence prices is therefore misleading. Compare a full three-to-five-year cost for the same scope, including add-ons and integrations you would need with each system.
At Bundo Tech we do not quote from a price list. After a free discovery call we give you a fixed-scope quote for your Odoo project, so you can compare it line by line with any SAP Business One offer you have.
Which is easier to implement and customise?
Both systems need a proper implementation partner for anything beyond a very small company. The practical differences are:
- Phasing: Odoo apps can go live one at a time. Many clients start with Sales, Purchase, Inventory and Accounting, then add Manufacturing or POS in a second phase.
- No-code changes: with Odoo Studio, key users can add fields, change forms, build reports and create simple automations without a developer.
- Developer changes: Odoo modules are written in Python and XML on an open framework, so deep changes are possible and there is a large pool of developers. SAP Business One uses its SDK, Service Layer and the add-on model, which works well but ties you more closely to specialist partners.
- User adoption: Odoo's web interface is the same across all apps, which reduces training time for staff who use several modules.

Is SAP Business One better for manufacturing and distribution?
SAP Business One handles standard distribution and light manufacturing well: bills of materials, production orders and MRP runs. For more complex needs, such as process manufacturing, shop-floor control or advanced warehouse management, companies usually add partner solutions.
Odoo includes Manufacturing, PLM (engineering change orders), Quality, Maintenance and a shop-floor tablet view as native apps, together with barcode-driven warehouse operations in Inventory. For manufacturers and distributors who want production, quality, maintenance and sales on one platform, Odoo usually needs fewer third-party products. See our Odoo for manufacturing page for typical scopes.
Which handles local tax and e-invoicing better?
Both rely on country localisations. Odoo ships official fiscal localisation packages for many countries, with charts of accounts, taxes and, in several countries, e-invoicing connectors, for example ZATCA in Saudi Arabia and Peppol-based e-invoicing in Europe. SAP Business One localisations are also available for many countries, often complemented by partner add-ons for e-invoicing.
Whatever you choose, check the localisation for your exact country and mandate before you sign. We have written detailed guides on ZATCA Phase 2 integration with Odoo and German e-invoicing in Odoo.
When should you choose SAP Business One?
- Your parent company runs SAP S/4HANA and requires subsidiaries to use SAP for consolidation and reporting.
- Your auditors, bank or group finance team insist on an SAP product.
- You already have SAP Business One running well with a trusted partner and your needs are mainly finance, purchasing and stock.
When should you choose Odoo?
- You want one system for sales, CRM, website, eCommerce, POS, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, HR and service.
- You want to start small and add apps as you grow, without new licences for each product.
- You value clear public pricing, open-source code and freedom to change partners or host where you like.
- You need to customise processes quickly, with Studio for key users and Python for developers.
For most growing small and mid-sized companies we work with in Europe, the Gulf, the USA and Pakistan, Odoo is the better fit for this reason: it covers the whole business on one platform at a lower and more predictable cost. If SAP Business One fits your situation better, we will tell you so in the discovery call.
How do you migrate from SAP Business One to Odoo?
- Discovery: map your current SAP Business One processes, add-ons, reports and integrations, and decide what to keep, change or drop.
- Solution design: map each process to Odoo apps and note any gaps that need configuration, Studio changes or custom modules.
- Data plan: decide which master data (customers, vendors, items, BoMs, price lists) and which history (open documents, opening balances, optionally past years) will move.
- Extraction and cleaning: export data from the SAP Business One database, remove duplicates and fix codes and units of measure.
- Configuration and test imports: configure Odoo, import data into a test database, and reconcile stock values and balances with SAP reports.
- User training and acceptance testing: key users run real scenarios end to end in the test database.
- Cut-over: freeze transactions, load final balances and open documents, and go live, usually at a month or year end.
- Hypercare: close support for the first weeks while users settle in.
Our Odoo implementation service follows this approach, and our Odoo consulting team can run a short fit-gap study before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo better than SAP Business One?
It depends on your needs. Odoo is usually better for companies that want one integrated system for sales, operations, finance, HR and eCommerce at a predictable cost. SAP Business One is a strong choice for subsidiaries of SAP-based groups and for companies focused mainly on finance and distribution.
Is Odoo cheaper than SAP Business One?
In most SME projects we see, Odoo has a lower total cost because all apps are included in its paid plans and fewer third-party add-ons are needed. SAP Business One pricing comes from partners and varies by user type and add-ons, so compare full multi-year quotes for the same scope rather than licence prices alone.
Can Odoo replace SAP Business One?
Yes. Odoo covers the same core areas, including accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory and manufacturing, and adds CRM, eCommerce, POS, HR and service apps. A fit-gap study before migration shows which processes work out of the box and which need configuration or custom modules.
How long does it take to move from SAP Business One to Odoo?
Timelines depend on the number of companies, apps, integrations and data volume. A focused rollout of core apps for a single company can take a few months, while multi-company projects take longer. We give a fixed timeline together with the quote after the discovery phase.
Does Odoo work with SAP for group reporting?
Yes. Odoo has an external API, so subsidiaries running Odoo can send financial data to a parent company's SAP system or to a consolidation tool. This needs the Odoo Custom plan or a self-hosted setup, and the integration should be designed with your group finance team.
Can I try Odoo before deciding?
Yes. Odoo offers a free trial on its website, and Bundo Tech can prepare a demo with your own products, customers and processes so you can compare it directly with SAP Business One.
